This is talk Number 13 in a series that will become the You are a media company course. This is the 2nd of the 4 that I will speak about the SEO and why it’s important. Last chat, best practices for SEO and why it’s important. This chat, I will focus on 12 things you should keep in mind about SEO.

Definition of a SEO: Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine result (according to MOZ).
Things to remember
  1. Research is probably the most important thing to keep in mind (e.g. Google Trends, Google Keyword Tool)
  2. Google doesn’t read your website like you and I do
  3. The name of the game is to show up on the first page / really top 3
  4. The long tail is real and that’s where a majority of the opportunities lie
  5. There are hundreds of ranking factors (see below)
  6. Speed kills  – compressed images
  7. Linking is important (in page, backlinks and linking out)
  8. Content is Royalty / Quality content
  9. Social Media
  10. Name images – ALT attributes and file names
  11. Troubleshoot and adjustment
  12. Technical issues are important (e.g. robots.txt, sitemap, CMS, analytics)
